What hardware / components come with the iPQMS Battery Monitoring System?
A complete BMS system will have the following components:
Does the iPQMS calculate the capacity of the batteries?
No, the iPQMS does not perform a load test, so there is no way for the system to calculate the capacity. The system does detect and record all discharge events to show how each cell performed during the duration of the test.
What are the options for installation of the system(s)?
There are several options for installation:
Can the iPQMS monitor battery systems in parallel?
Yes but with certain limitations. A single iPQMS can monitor every jar / cell in a parallel system, however it can only monitor (1) string voltage and (1) string current. Additionally, the iPQMS cannot differentiate between the banks and will show all jars / cells as one bank.
How does Eagle Eye’s Centroid 2 software work?
The Centroid 2 software is composed of two parts, the server and the client. Centroid 2 Server is installed on a dedicated PC that must be connected to the same network as the iPQMS system(s). This software runs in the background on a Windows environment as a service. Centroid Viewer client must also be installed on a PC that is on the same network as the iPQMS. The client can be installed on multiple computers and can pull data directly from the PC with Centroid 2 Server running.
How does the iPQMS test jar/cell resistance?
The system injects 400mA to 2A (max.) AC current for a duration of 900ms per jar / cell. During the 900ms duration is (3) 300ms tests. The average of these (3) tests is used as the final test result.
What are the cable distance limitation between the MPU to RU and RU to batteries?
MPU to RU: 10 m (32 ft)
RU to Batteries: 30 m (100 ft)
Which parameters are measured in real-time?
String voltage and current are measured in real-time, values are continually updated on the iPQMS screen and in the software.
Which parameters are measured on interval and what is that interval?
Cell voltage, cell resistance, and cell temperature are measured on set intervals. These intervals can be set at any time from every 10 min. to once daily. In the event of a discharge these parameters will be measured continually until the discharge has ended.
How long does the system take to measure the resistance of the whole string?
The length of time varies depending on the number of jars. Regardless of the jar quantity, the system takes 3 seconds to measure the jar (actual load duration is 900ms per jar). The measurement cycle on a 60-cell system measuring per jar would take 180 seconds.
Does the iPQMS have any dry contact relays?
No, the iPQMS does not have a native dry contact relay. An add-on relay can be purchased which will allow a single Form C to be used in the event that any alarms are active. A dedicated PC is required for each iPQMS when using the add-on relay.
What are the communication options for the iPQMS?
There are two standard communication options for the iPQMS (only one communication method can be utilized per system).
Are there any options for using Eagle Eye’s software in addition to Modbus protocol?
Yes, a single iPQMS can communicate via TCP/IP to a dedicated PC with Centroid 2 installed. Through the software, Modbus protocol can output from the PC. Each iPQMS system requires its own server PC for this solution and is offered as complete kit.
Is the iPQMS hardware rated as explosion proof?
The hardware is not officially rated as explosion proof, however it was designed to be mounted and exposed permanently in a battery room environment. If ex-proof is absolutely required then cabinet solutions are available to meet any specific requirements.
Can the iPQMS measure lithium battery types?
No, currently the system cannot measure any type of lithium battery.
What frequency does the iPQMS use during measurement?

Eagle Eye’s iPQMS Battery Monitoring System is designed to measure the aging status of up to 448 jars (or 448 cells) by measuring and recording: string voltage and current, as well as jar/cell voltage, internal resistance, connection resistance and temperature.
The iPQMS is the premier real-time battery monitoring system in Eagle Eye’s BMS-Series. It ensures backup power systems are optimally maintained in large-scale environments. The iPQMS is the main processing unit that measures up to 448 jars (or 448 cells) utilizing up to seven Relaying Units (RU). Each RU connects up to 64 jars (or 64 cells) and captures data from these batteries and sends it to the MPU in real-time. The iPQMS can be used over a private network via TCP/IP, or locally with RS-232. Networked systems can utilize SMS/Email alerts during an alarm outbreak. If you do not wish to use our Battery Management Software, Modbus protocol is available for third-party integration. Flexible expanding solutions allow multiple iPQMS units to monitor all your systems in real-time.
Battery failure can happen overnight, and Eagle Eye’s BMS-Series real-time battery monitoring allows full protection and confidence against such failures. Ohmic resistance and voltage measurements (per jar) are taken as often as every five minutes. String current, DC voltage, and temperature are measured in real-time. These measured parameters will provide the user a real-time understanding of their batteries state-of-health.
100% functionality is required for backup power systems to be effective. Every battery in a system contributes to the overall health of a system, and one bad battery can compromise an entire backup power system. Continuous battery monitoring will provide the results to ensure proper battery management and protection during an event outage.
Ohmic resistance results represent the condition and state-of-health of the battery, and expose weaknesses in cells & intercell conditions without stressing the battery. Cell and string voltage results can indicate if the battery is fully charged or if there are problems with the battery or charger. Stable temperature results indicate a proper operating environment, while high recorded temperatures can be a sign of thermal runaway. Use the iPQMS battery monitoring system to measure these parameters to protect the integrity of your system, and exceed industry testing requirements by IEEE and NERC.
Before installation of the iPQMS, Eagle Eye will send you an BMS-Series Site Survey Form. This site survey form allows us to customize your iPQMS battery monitoring system based on your batteries, network, and battery site.
The iPQMS battery monitoring system comes complete with Eagle Eye's Centroid Battery Management Software package which allows all battery systems to be monitored 24 hours a day, 365 days a year via a remote computer. Centroid provides real-time battery monitoring and string/cell trending with reporting capabilities. String trending reports provide system resistance, voltage, temperature, and voltage/ohms comparison. Cell trending reports provide battery/connection resistance, voltage, and temperature. Custom alarm settings can be configured per string.
Reduce maintenance costs, improve up-time and manage battery assets effectively by using the iPQMS battery monitoring solution. Real-time battery monitoring systems protect the user from costly downtime, data loss, and security risks. Real-time battery monitoring also reduces maintenance and replacement costs by maximizing battery life.
